In December 792 UC, Bendling was assigned to serve under Commander Reinhard von Lohengramm (then Müsel) aboard the cruiser Hässliche Entlein for a special mission by Rear Admiral Arbentraut. The operation would take them into Alliance territory, to stop an attempted defection by Imperial Count Herxheimer. He told Lohengramm that his role was that of an inspector, but in reality, he had secret orders to find and delete important information regarding the family of Marquis Wilhelm von Littenheim that Herxheimer was in possession of. Bendling criticized Lohengramm's decisions several times and the two argued frequently. They ended up capturing Herxheimer's vessel, only to find that the count had died during an accident. The only survivor was his daughter, Margareta von Herxheimer. After accessing the sensitive information aboard the deceased count's ship, Bendling was so shaken by it that he decided to defect to the Alliance with the 10-year old Margereta, as her guardian. She agreed, with some reluctance at first, and the two of them left the Hässliche Entlein aboard her ship to the Alliance. Upon returning to Iserlohn Fortress, Lohengramm reported that Bendling had been killed in action, to prevent his parents from being punished for their son's defection. His ultimate fate is unknown.
