Princess Kathrein first meets Ludwig shortly before he puts on one of Dorothea's items and is cursed to appear as a frog to anyone except Dorothea. She adopts a haughty demeanor and refuses to talk to him, deeming him of a status below hers. While playing outside later, Kathrein drops her golden ball into a pond, where it's picked up by Ludwig, who seizes the opportunity to demand a kiss (that would break the curse) in exchange for returning the ball. Kathrein agrees but leaves once she gets her ball back, without fulfilling her end of the promise. After Ludwig requests an audience with the king and explains his circumstances, Kathrein is made to keep her word, and the two spend some time together commiserating over how the world treats them based on their appearance.
